Research professor “Rule of Law in the Age of Globalization” - Berlin
pour information (deadline proche: 31 Oct.)
Irmgard Coninx Research Professorship
The WZB seeks to hire for a period of 3 to 5 years for the research area “Rule of Law in the Age of Globalization”
a research professor
This professorship will be based in the WZB’s newly established Rule of Law Center (headed by Wolfgang Merkel, Gunnar Folke Schuppert, Michael Zürn)
Two fields of research are of particular interest:
1. The meaning of due process of law for economic development is widely acknowledged. Nevertheless, in the age of globalization, successful transformation economies face a multiplicity of problems in trying to establish the rule of law and due process. The issues are: What kinds of institutional mechanisms and adaptations have been developed in the wake of constitutionalization and democratisation? Which particular concept of the rule of law and democracy has prevailed? What role do external actors play in this development? Research should focus on current democratization processes and the structure of the rule of law at present, with special consideration of legal and cultural contexts.
2. The trans- and supranationalization of political institutions have led many observers to conclude that we are currently witnessing a legalization or juridification, or even a constitutionalization of international relations. Corresponding processes outside of the OECD world have yet to be analyzed. Thus, the questions to be addressed are: How are legal structures and mechanisms of international institutions perceived and dealt with in such countries? How do transformation societies become integrated into the system of multilateral institutions and which new and innovative solutions can be developed?
Applicants must have expertise in at least one of the research areas mentioned above and will have combined legal and social science scholarship. Beyond their outstanding disciplinary qualifications, applicants should also possess extensive knowledge and experience of at least one region of the world characterized by accelerated economic growth and rapid institutional transformation (such as Asia or Latin America). We therefore seek a scholar who will use a theory-guided empirical approach to investigate the functional and normative relationship between democracy and the rule of law in transformation processes, such as democratic consolidation in Non-OECD-Democracies.
Participation in the “Berlin Roundtables on Transnationality” and the counselling/coaching of Coninx scholarship holders is welcome.
The position will be compensated according to the rules for remuneration of full professors at German universities (W 3 BBesO).
The WZB expressly invites woman to apply
The position will be filled as early as possible and is intended to be combined with a professorship at one of the universities of Berlin.
Disabled candidates with equal qualifications will be given preference.
The deadline for application is October, 31, 2008. Complete application documents should be sent either by post or email to the WZB president Prof. Jutta Allmendinger Ph.D.:
