Applications are invited for the position of Research Fellow in Ethnography at The Irish Centre for Social Gerontology. This is a one-year fixed term contract. The successful applicant will work in close partnership with world class clinicians, engineers and researchers in academic, public health and industry settings. Your primary task will be to conduct ethnographic and qualitative research that informs the direction of a research strand exploring the potential of technology interventions for cognitive health in later life. You will work on a pioneering collaboration between gerontologists, psychiatrists and neurologists and within a combined industry and academic engineering team. Specifically, in this role you will engage with the multi-disciplinary team on the Cognitive research strand at the TRIL Centre. You will also be engaged in cross strand collaboration within the TRIL programme of research. The position is based within the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology (ICSG) www.icsg.ie<http://www.icsg.ie> at NUI Galway and will involve significant travel nationally.
In this role you will:
• Conduct a qualitative and ethnographic research programme focusing on issues relating to cognitive health in later life and work to translate these into interventions for subsequent piloting and evaluation
• Work within a multi-person, multi-disciplinary project involving designers, software and hardware engineers, clinicians and policy researchers
• Use the ongoing research to shape technological interventions and assess their potential for beneficial impact on the lives of ageing individuals and communities
• Actively communicate your findings and their implications to Technology Research for Independent Living (TRIL) collaborators
• Transfer knowledge to research communities, policy-makers and the general public
• Work to give ICSG a strong national & international profile through publications, presentations and conferences
Qualifications:
Candidates will have:
• A PhD in anthropology, sociology or related discipline, or an equivalent qualification, with a preference for those with experience working in health-care or ageing-related research areas or with design teams
• Experience in conducting ethnographic research and translating findings into design strategies
• Experience of working with interdisciplinary teams, especially designers and engineers
• A record of, and desire to publish and communicate research widely
• Excellent communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills
• High levels of initiative, commitment to deadlines and team interaction
About the TRIL Centre
The TRIL Centre is a coordinated collection of research projects addressing the physical, cognitive and social consequences of ageing, all informed by ethnographic research and supported by a shared pool of knowledge and engineering resources.
The TRIL Centre’s mission is to discover and deliver technology solutions which support independent ageing, ideally in a home environment. This will improve the quality of life of older citizens while reducing the burden on carers and on the healthcare system. Salary: €62,963 per annum
