Postes à l’institut Max Planck pour l’anthropologie

Max-Planck-Institut für ethnologische Forschung
Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology

Department II of our Institute (Socialist and Postsocialist Eurasia) has vacancies at multiple levels with effect from February 2009 (or as soon as possible thereafter):
• W2 (equivalent to the position of Associate Professor, one position available)
• TVöD (Senior Researchers)
• Postdoctoral Grantholders

The positions to be filled fall in the following two areas:

Historical Anthropology
It is intended to establish a new Focus Group to work on related projects that would draw on both disciplines and combine them in innovative ways in one or more regions of Asia and Europe. Theory, methods and time frames are all open: oral history applications focused on the socialist era are welcome, but primarily archival projects will also be considered; we
particularly encourage proposals that address issues of long term transformation and social evolution.

Kinship and Social Support
We wish to consolidate an existing group of researchers who work in China and Vietnam, who in turn build upon earlier research funded by the European Union, Kinship and Social Security in Europe. Applications proposing fieldwork in an East Asian country are particularly encouraged, but projects in other regions will also be considered.

Eligibility: PhD in social/cultural anthropology or a closely related discipline. Applicants for the W2 position should have completed the Habilitation degree (or alternatively have at least one major publication beyond the PhD).

The W2 Position is expected to lead to tenure (following formal authorization by the Max Planck Society and a  robationary period of one year).

The TvöD Positions are for three years (with the possibility of a two-year extension). These positions are open to scholars who have completed their doctorate within the last ten years.

The Postdoctoral Grants are for two years (a one-year extension is possible in most cases). Postdoctoral Grants can only be awarded to scholars who have received their doctorate within the last ten years. These grants are not taxed and are free from social security stipulations.

The Max Planck Society is committed to raising the proportion of women in under-represented fields; we thus explicitly encourage applications by women. Individuals with disabilities will be given priority, assuming equal qualifications.

There is no application form. Applicants should send the following documentation:
- a cover letter
- a CV including a list of publications
- a short (not more than two pages) summary of the research proposed, which should demonstrate clear links both to the applicant’s previous work and qualifications, and to the two fields prioritized by the department

-photocopies of university degrees
- names of 2-3 referees, whom we may contact

Applications may be submitted by email.
Final selection will be made following interviews at a date yet to be arranged. Please send applications to the following address by 30 September 2008:
